I climbed the stairs to Annie’s apartment. My steps were slow but resolute. I’d come armed with something she couldn’t say no to. The chocolate raspberry soufflé from Baked. It was Annie’s favorite. It would surely get her to talk to me. If not, I’d shove a forkful of the chocolaty goodness into her mouth and then talk to her while she chewed.
I stood outside her door and raised my hand to knock, but the sound of heated voices compelled me to stop.
The door was thin, and I could make out the muffled fight fairly easily.
“Why won’t you move in with me?” Mills demanded.
“I told you why,” Annie said. “I have to dedicate my time to my career right now.”
“And moving in with me would be a detriment to that? How do you figure?”
“Your apartment is too far away,” she said. “I don’t want to spend all my time commuting from Manhattan when I know I’ll have to be at Mother Shucker at five in the morning most mornings.”
“So, I’ll move in here. Problem solved. I don’t mind commuting into the city.”
“This place is too small.”
“Then we’ll get a bigger place.”
“Mills. No. I like it here. I like my life the way it is. Why are you trying to force me to change it?”
“I’m not trying to force you to change it. I just want to take our relationship to the next level, but you keep putting on the brakes.”
“I’m just not ready,” she said. “I’m sorry, Mills. I really am, but I told you I had to take it slow. And now I feel like I’m being pressured into something that I’m not ready for. Maybe in a few months, after Mother Shucker opens…”
“You’ll find an excuse then, too,” he said, his tone sounding defeated. “A few months won’t make a difference. You either want to live with me or you don’t.”
His statement hung in the air as he waited for her to reply.
“I don’t,” she said softly. “I don’t want to live with you.”
“Why? Because of Caleb?”
“What does he have to do with anything?”
I should’ve knocked on the door and alerted them to my presence, but I couldn’t. I wanted to hear what Annie had to say more than I wanted to practice the common decency of not eavesdropping.
“This has nothing to do with Caleb.”
He laughed, but it wasn’t in amusement. “Like hell it doesn’t.”
“Mills,” she began. “If this had anything to do with Caleb, the Annie of old would’ve moved in with you the first time you asked. She would’ve dived into a relationship with you in hopes of trying to forget that she caused someone she cared about a great deal of pain. The Annie of old would have gotten lost in you because that would’ve been easy. Don’t you see? I want this to work. I want us to work. But I can’t do something before I’m ready. I won’t make the same mistake with you that I made with Caleb.”
Point for Annie, she actually sounded mature.
